Microsoft Edge has the ability to translate webpages to and from a variety of world languages. Microsoft Edge will offer to translate a webpage to the user’s set language if it determines that the webpage is written in another language. By default, a user’s language is set to English. As a user, you can change Microsoft Edge’s language so that webpages can be translated to languages other than English. Follow the directions below to change the language of Microsoft Edge.


  1. Open Microsoft Edge
  2. Click the 3 dots button located at the top right of the screen, then click Settings
  1. Click Languages on the left hand side
  1. Click Add Languages
  1. In the menu that pops up, select the language you would like to add to Microsoft Edge. You can also type in your intended language to find it quicker.
  1. You will see your selected language along with the default language (English).
  1. You can make a language the default language for Microsoft Edge. This will change all the menus and user interface options to the language you select. It will also make Microsoft Edge offer to translate webpages to the language you select. To change the default language, click the 3 dots next to the language you want to use.
  1. The menu that appears offers the ability to change the default language for Microsoft Edge, along with the option to offer translation to the language you have selected. Check off the options you require. Microsoft Edge will need to restart for your changes to be applied.
  1. Once your settings have been checked off, click the Restart button that appears

By changing the default language of Microsoft Edge, some webpages will automatically display in the language your have chosen. For others, Microsoft Edge will offer to translate content if it detects a different language within the webpage being viewed.

Below, Microsoft Edge is set to display in Spanish. Note all user interface elements are now in Spanish. By changing the default language of Microsoft Edge, web services are able to make note of that change and display their own content in the language you have chosen. As you can see below, Canvas is displaying its user interface in Spanish.

If you would like to translate a webpage to another language, you always have the option to right click on the content and Translate the content to the language of your choice.

If you would like to change the language it is translated to, click the Translate button that appears in the URL bar.
